| We are home to a wide range of railway icons and literally millions of artifacts, from Mallard - the world's fastest steam locomotive - to a lock of Robert Stephenson's hair. Our collection, including 103 locomotives and 177 other items of rolling stock, tells the railway story from Rocket to Eurostar. The National Railway Collection is Britain’s largest single body of historic railway material. The Museum inherited collections, which were started in the late nineteenth century by some of the pre-grouping railway companies. |

The Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society exists to ensure the future existence of Barrow Hill Roundhouse by developing the site, therefore avoiding the building falling into "disrepair by neglect" through non-use as : a site for preserved locomotive and railway rolling stock display, storage and repair, a training centre for the railway preservation industry, a centre for visitor interest in railway engineering skills... |

| The railway museum is the only preserved Irish Standard Gauge (5 ft 3 in) railway operating in Ireland. This makes the Downpatrick Railway Museum a unique place to visit. It is a representation of the former Belfast and County Down Railway terminus in Downpatrick, which closed in 1950, two years after the network was taken into state-ownership. In addition to guided tours of the exhibitions and workshops, on running days visitors can experience the delights of traditional railway travel. Steam locomotives from the 1920s and 30s, or diesels from the 60s will take the passengers in 50 - 100 year old carriages from Downpatrick, past the rebuilt Loop Platform to a platform with direct access to a Viking King's burial site. |
