I rode in the Parlor Car of the 9:00AM train on June 17, 2003 round trip between Durango and Silverton. It is an experience not to be missed. Because of the last minute ticket sales the night before the train was double headed by locomotives 482 & 478 which made for interesting photos from the end of the train. The view of the canyon is breath taking. The Polar Car has good wine and beer. Downsides: we were not prepared for the cold in Silverton; it is a long day; not for people afraid of heights.

I spent about an hour in the museum and enjoyed it very much. I was waiting for the train to return so I could get some photographs of it returning and spent time looking over the great displays. I grew up in the San Luis Valley, but had never been to the museum. The private car collection was my favorite part.

I rode the winter photographer's trip on February 19, 2006 and it was terrific. 100 photographers all shooting the same scene--that in itself remarkable. We got off the train at least 10 times for run-bys. I want to do the fall trip in the future.
