This place is well worth a visit by anyone looking for a great time with trains, and even for the serious student of history as well. The group operates some five miles of the old Norfolk Southern (originally the Durham & South Carolina Railroad) for public rides once a month, so this is not just a bunch of static displays. The railroad equipment in the museum is unique in every way from the operating steam switching locomotive to the 1913 NS caboose to the SR RPO undergoing restoration. The volunteers are all friendly, approachable, and more than willing to talk to anyone about their railroad. Do NOT miss this one!

Maybe it's not usual for a girl to be a train-nut, but I am, and I found this place to be WONDERFUL! The equipment on display is more than able to satisfy the cravings of a dedicated railfan, yet is presented in a way able to be understood by anyone. The train ride is great, and the kids love it. Even the live music at the depot while waiting for the train was great. Try to get to talk to the Dispatcher in the Yard Office when you visit. He is an absolute WEALTH of information on this railroad even before it became a museum, and rairoads in North Carolina in general. I would go back here as often as I can!

Great palce to visit if you love oor like railroads. Train rides. but they do offer Cab rides. The cab rides is frist come. The day i visit the ride was short. It was on a weekday. so not sure if they have longer rides. Also turntable rides were available. Great equipment in the roundhouse. Also they have classic cars to see.
