I went there many years ago when they had first begun restoration. I have returned several times since. They have a superb collection of running and static pieces(including a preserved 4-8-8-4 Big Boy), and even allow touring of their main shop and round house. Mind you this is a functioning shop so you might want to bring ear plugs. The air smells of coal and oil and the personell and volunteers all love the machines as we all do. A plus is an inexpensive excursion train and the fact that the museum is open year round.

I was there in 1986 when Congress first named it an Historic Site. There was a short train ride and a few pieces on display then. They were working on the turntable and getting the roundhouse setup to start repairing and storeing locomotives and such. A great bunch of very friendly and dedicated people showed us around and explained what was yet to come. I am very anxious to get back.

I guess my expectations were different from the previous response.```` When I saw the large roundhouse, I expected to spend 4-6 hours inside.``However, I found most of it was taken up by exhibits.Yes, the tour was good but the one loco I wanted to see, NKP 759 was stored out of public view. Thankfully the guide took me back to where it was stored.````If this is supposed to describe the Anthracite Railroads it falls short on equipment. It seems,at least when I was there, that CPR locos were the only ones working.```` If you do go, I would strongly recommend the hotel in the old Lackawanna Station if you plan on staying. Well done. I believe it is a Radisson but I am not sure

Thanks to my Father for getting me intersted in Steam Locomotives. Have never for got that time while heading to Maine on a vacation all those years gone by.`````` Thanks to Steam Town for the Memories.

We went upp the day after a large snowstorm to ride the Polar Express (based on the book of that name), with our 5 year old. It was magical. There was a full moon, snow on the ground, a few snowflakes falling and the STEAM! ````All the kids had the pajamas on and Santa's elves read the story as we traveled to the North Pole. The sparkle in those kids eyes was better than Disney!````The Museum is well done. The exhibits were informative and had some interactive pieces to keep the little hands happy. The Roundhouse is beautiful - it was the first that we have been able to enter and really get a feel for. ````There is a rumor that the Polar Express may be cancelled because of copyright, now that the rights were bought by a big studio - that would be a shame! Let's not let that happen!

Enjoy the ride on the steam locomotive, though I wish it was more than just in the yard (engine needed repairing before they would take it out of the yard). Like everything about Steam Town and will go there again!
