This rail museum is about 30 miles from Hilo. Since most people spend their time on the Kona side of the island this can be a bit of a hike.````The rail museum is strictly historical. There is a switch engine which still, apparently, runs but since there is only about 75 foot of track left, it hardly mattered. Much of the track has been torn up and right-of-way has changed hands in since the 1946 Tsunami.````There are plenty of odd bits of memorabilia and displays to look at including an utterly charming (if primitive) turntable and roundhouse display made by some local school children. Since almost all pieces of rolling stock and power was sold as scrapped after 1946 there is little big stuff to look at. There are a couple of informative and really interesting videos to watch and wandering around the preserved station is interesting.````The station sits on the location where it always did. This location contained a wye and the area is still there although the wye, for the most part, is not.````The staff is knowledgable, pleasant, and eager. The location is sceanic.````All in all I think, a worthwhile stop.

While this is not a big musuem, Laupahoehoe is not a big town. In fact, what you get is a trip back into time, when the pace was slow and you had time to sit on the front porch and talk story about the events of the day. The museum has a small switch engine that runs along the 100 feet or so of track that is part of the old wye. It is just a place to learn a little of how the Hamakua Coast was established and a little of the culture that makes itself home in Hawaii.
