Western Mining and Railroad Museum
Address: 296 South Main St., Helper, UTAH, 84526 USA. Tel.: (435) 472-3009 Toll Free:
The Western Mining and Railroad Museum is located in the small town of Helper, Utah, two hours southeast of Salt Lake City, named so because of the engines required to help the trains climb the steep grades to Soldier Summit. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad established the town when the railroad came through the area and coal, that was needed to fuel the steam engines, was found. The museum tells the history of the railroad, mining and the lifestyles of the multiethnic immigrants who came into the area between 1880 and about 1936 to work on the railroad and work in the coal mines. There are four floors of artifacts and photographs that tell the history.
